No longer a wardrobe staple for our favorite superheroes, the cape goes from crime-fighting to cocktail, sweeping to short.

If you’re looking for a Fall-Winter 2010 item to invest in, you’ll have your pick: frill, electric-colored versions at Yves Saint Laurent; the camel wool renditions at Hussein Chalayan; the military-inspired at Junya Watanabe; and luxurious leather capes at Christian Dior.

With so many options, incorporating the cape into your everyday ensemble can get tricky. Here are some tips on how to best pull on (and not off) this cold weather look:

Alexander McQueen silk print cape

Sheer and Sweeping

No one does rocker chic better that Alexander McQueen in this silk chiffon cape with a graphic tree print on the back. Word to the wise: Although semi-sheer, this silk cape is on the lengthy side and not advised for someone who is petite. But for those who are tall, don’t overpower the silk cape with other prints. A slim silhouette in neutral colors will direct all the attention to the cape and of course, its fantastic print.

This wool Comme des Garcons cape doesn’t have to go to great lengths to get its point across. Flared at the shoulders and with a hood that cleverly zips down the center, you will never tire of this of item in your wardrobe. Its length works well for all heights and body types. However, those with a short torso (I fall under this category) should opt for a longer top to elongate the figure. And again, do wear the cape over a slim silhouette for a classic, pulled-together look.

Long and Utilitarian

Function meets style in this long quilted See by Chloe cape. The dark forest green quilted trim and details accentuate the all-over green hue. Its diagonal cut and sweeping length also make for a dramatic entrance. This style fits best on taller women and on women looking for maximum coverage.
