Warm up to the season with more must-have winter accessories. From sequined hats to wool tights, the key is to layer if you want to stay warm.
More items you’ll find on my list:
Tights so popular, they are barely in stock
The Right Tight
Whether opaque or ribbed wool, tights are an essential for keeping the chill at bay. Sheer, solid tights can be worn under pants and denim for added insulation during those 30-degree or below days. Embellished tights in paisley or patterns wear well with a formal skirt or dress for a holiday party.
But wool tights hug close to the body and provide far better warmth than most pants and leggings, given you find a good pair. At J. Crew, the ribbed wool tights ($26.50, see above) are so popular that the next shipment is not due to arrive until January 2011.
No other winter hat beats the faux fur trapper
The Trapper Keeper
Not since I purchased a furry men’s trapper hat last year did I ever get so many compliments about my winter accessories. What started as an accessory on a “Winter Nomad” fashion shoot quickly became my go-to hat of the season. The furry hat not only helped me survive a massive blizzard, but kept me feeling pretty fashion-forward the entire time.
Last year’s faux fur trapper gets an update. This all-black trapper hat ($95, middle) by Juicy Couture allows you to put the flaps up thanks to a button on the side, or to leave the flaps hanging down. Think of it as two hats in one.
Wrap it up with a chunky knit scarf
It’s a Wrap
Now is the time to be a “scarf person” if you weren’t before. While my linen and pashmina scarves were great for summer, the thin fibers will provide little warmth in the cold. It’s time to look for thick knit scarves in a mélange of color and styles that will play up your winter wardrobe.
Start with this chunky knit scarf ($36, bottom image) from Topshop. The neutral tones guarantee that this scarf will complement the colors of almost any set of gloves and hats you decide to add to your look. Plus, there’s no better way to keep your upper body warm.
